Top Ten Bucket and Spade Seaside Experiences

The IHBC is delighted to support the Seaside Heritage Network’s ‘Top Ten Bucket and Spade Seaside Experiences’ review, with ‘in conversation’ guest Wayne Hemingway, in the Winter Gardens and hosted by Blackpool Council, 2-5 pm, 11/09, with a free optional tour.

Dr Kathryn Ferry, a founder member of the Seaside Heritage Network, said: ‘The Seaside Heritage Network began as a subject specialist network led by a number of coastal museums but only had short-term funding. In its reincarnated form we want the network to have a wider remit to connect everyone with an interest in championing the tangible and intangible heritage of our seaside resorts.’

‘Domestic tourism was a huge industry during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It has left an important architectural legacy but the first conservation challenge is to get recognition for that legacy after a period when our British seaside resorts were too often dismissed as unfashionable and unworthy of attention.’

‘To promote the special character of our seaside heritage we’ve begun by running online seminars and this summer have asked the public to vote for their Top Ten seaside places and experiences. If you work in a seaside location or are just a fan of beach huts, piers and proms we’d like to invite you to join us for the announcement of the final Bucket and Spade List at Blackpool Winter Gardens on 11 September.’

‘The event is free and will include a discussion about seaside regeneration projects with designer Wayne Hemingway, an optional tour of the Winter Gardens complex and the chance to meet other people passionate about raising the profile of our resort heritage.’

Optional tour of Winter Gardens:

Join our friend Carl Carrington, Head of Planning, Built Heritage & Conservation at Blackpool Council as he guides us through an access-all-areas tour of Blackpool’s stunning Winter Gardens. The Winter Gardens opened in 1878 and features iconic venues including the Empress Ballroom, The Opera House, and the new Conference & Exhibition centre.
